Defence Animal Training Regiment
The important role played by Army dogs and horses was brought home to me during a visit to the Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR) at Remount Barracks in Melton Mowbray.
I was invited to the barracks by the Commanding Officer Lt Col Moran, and I learned about the varied work that takes place there. Military horses that take part in ceremonial duties in London will spend time in training in Melton Mowbray before being handed over to their regiments, while dogs are also taught there for specialist searching tasks and asset protection duties.
I was hugely impressed by the commitment to equine and canine care and the training given to military personnel to become riding instructors, dog handlers, farriers, and specialists in veterinary care.
