Visit to East Midlands Airport

Prior to Christmas the High Sheriff visited East Midlands Airport, which is home to the UK’s largest pure air cargo operation which links the region to 185 of the world’s largest cities and handles more than 400,000 tonnes of goods a year. Ahead of the Christmas period, this equates to around one million packages a night!

Guided by Ioan Reed – Aspley I saw the major logistics firms based at the airport, including DHL, UPS, FedEx and Royal Mail, handling goods on and off planes.

In between the arrival and departure of multiple cargo flights, we were expertly driven around by Neil from the Airport Fire Service Team including a quick run up the main runway.

I was proud to hear about EMA’s national significance and the pivotal role it plays in supporting many businesses based in Leicestershire. The airport’s position in central England gives it a strategic advantage over other airports and EMA contributes around £443m GVA to the regional economy and to support the continued presence of a fifth of the top 500 corporates in the East Midlands.

It was an opportunity to thank everyone at East Midlands Airport for their work, which is so important for so many of us throughout Leicestershire and the East Midlands.
